Terms of Service

Last updated 16 August 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Umnis (“UmnisBooks”, “we”, “us”) covering the UmnisBooks website and our Android, iOS and macOS apps. By creating an account or using the service you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

1. Your account

You must be at least 13 years old to hold an account, and old enough to enter a contract in your country. You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for activity under your account. Give us accurate registration details and keep them current. Tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.

One account is for one person. Do not share credentials or resell access.

2. What you are buying

Books, chapters, audiobooks, bundles and periodical subscriptions on UmnisBooks are licensed to you, not sold. Subject to these terms and to payment, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to download, read and listen to the titles in your library on devices you control, for your own non-commercial use.

You may not:

  • copy, redistribute, publish, sell, sublicense or lend the content;
  • remove, disable or circumvent any watermark, encryption or access control;
  • scrape, bulk-download or use automated means to extract the catalogue;
  • use the content to train a machine learning model without our written permission.

A rental gives you access for the stated period only; access ends automatically when the period expires. A periodical subscription gives you the issues published while it is active, and renews until you cancel. Titles may leave the catalogue when our agreement with a publisher ends; titles already in your library normally remain available, but if a publisher withdraws a title we may have to remove it, and we will refund you if that happens.

3. Prices and payment

Prices are shown before you confirm and include applicable tax unless stated otherwise. We accept mobile money (MTN, Telecel, AirtelTigo) and, on the web, cards via Stripe. You authorise us to charge the payment method you choose for the amount shown, and you confirm you are entitled to use it.

Subscriptions renew automatically at the interval shown until cancelled. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid the next charge; cancelling stops future charges but does not refund the current period. Where you buy through the Apple App Store or Google Play, those stores’ own payment and cancellation rules also apply and take precedence over this section.

4. Refunds

Because digital content is delivered immediately, you agree that delivery begins as soon as you complete a purchase, and that any statutory cooling-off right ends at that point.

We will refund you if a title is faulty, was not delivered, was charged twice, materially differs from its description, or is withdrawn from your library by a publisher. Request a refund within 14 days of the charge by contacting support@umnis.com. Refunds go back to the original payment method. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play must be refunded through those stores.

5. Content you create

Your highlights, notes, annotations and reviews stay yours. You grant us a licence to store, sync and display them back to you, and — for notes you deliberately share, and for reviews — to display them to the readers you shared with or to the public. Do not post anything unlawful, defamatory, hateful, infringing or spam; we may remove content that breaches this and suspend repeat offenders.

6. Acceptable use

Do not attempt to breach or probe our security, interfere with the service, reverse engineer the apps except to the extent the law permits, impersonate anyone, or use the service unlawfully. We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches these terms, and will tell you why unless the law prevents it.

7. Availability

We aim to keep the service running but do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may change, suspend or discontinue features. If we discontinue the service altogether we will give reasonable notice and a way to download or be refunded for the content in your library.

8. Ending the agreement

You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time — see the Privacy Policy for how. Deleting your account ends your licences and your access to purchased and rented titles, permanently. We may terminate or suspend your account for a material breach of these terms, or if required by law.

9. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited — including your non-excludable consumer rights.

Otherwise, and to the extent the law allows: the service and content are provided “as is” without implied warranties; we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for lost profits, revenue or data; and our total liability arising out of these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or GHS 500.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For material changes we will give notice in the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not, stop using the service and delete your account.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Ghana, and the courts of Ghana have exclusive jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protections and court access your local law gives you.
